Abstract
Image processing relates to the analysis and application of some operations in order to manipulate a digital image. The important applications of image processing include crop monitoring, weather prediction, traffic status analysis, biomedical imaging, surveillance videos, fingerprint recognition and retinal scans etc. There is a lot of scene information in an image, including the shape, size, color, & orientation of objects, but the first step in interpreting the image is to separate the foreground objects from the background. The necessity of edge detection in computer vision & image processing is highlighted by the fact that it is required to extract the contour of an object. These applications are based on a few important tasks namely edge detection, image segmentation, image enhancement and image restoration. This paper has focused to important tasks namely edge detection. Edge detection is a process in which the sharp discontinuities of an image are identified and located.
